Cristian Romero almost got himself another red card.

Tottenham Hotspur defeated Newcastle United 4-1 in the 16th round of the 2023-24 Premier League (PL) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England, at 1:30 a.m. ET on Nov. 11. The win leaves Tottenham in fifth place in the league with nine wins, three draws, and four losses (30 points). Newcastle remain in seventh place with eight wins, two draws, and six losses (26 points).

Romero was joined by Ben Davies in the backline on the day. Romero's return restored some stability to the defense. The Spurs allowed nine shots on goal on the day, but only three were on target. There were one or two close calls, but they were solid.

As the defense settled down, so did the offense. Spurs scored two goals in the first half alone, with two assists from Son Heung-min. They didn't stop attacking in the second half. In the 15th minute of the second half, Hischalisson scored his first multi-goal game of the season, and in the 38th minute, Son Heung-min finished off a penalty kick (PK) he created to make it four goals. Despite conceding a late goal in stoppage time, it was a 4-1 victory.

Despite the big win, Tottenham did have one unsettling moment on the night. In the 35th minute, Romero stepped on Callum Wilson's ankle. It was a fairly deep tackle, which caused the Newcastle players to become agitated, with Son Heung-min personally stopping them. 온라인카지노

But the punishment was a cotton bat. Referee Chris Kavanagh only issued a warning. He communicated with the video assistant referee (VAR) room. He checked for a 'serious foul'. But there was no reversal.

Gary Neville was furious, telling Sky Sports: "I'm angry to be honest. I was really angry. At first glance, it looks like a red card. Romero is crazy. He should always be tackling. It's not in his head to slow down. For me, it's a red card. He went over the ball and went straight to the ankle," he criticized.

Jamie Redknapp, a former Tottenham player, shook his head. "It's absolutely appalling. It only hurts the team. He always makes rash decisions. As a vice-captain, you have to set a good example. It's a red card all day long. I don't think he will learn. Some players can't be tamed," he added tongue-in-cheek.

Romero received a three-match suspension for a direct red card just last month. Tottenham's defense collapsed in his absence, drawing one and losing two against Wolverhampton, Aston Villa, and Manchester City. The problem is, it's a recurring problem, and it doesn't get fixed. Romero is in his third season with Tottenham and has already been sent off four times. "I have to correct, learn and continue," Romero said on social media on Tuesday. But everything takes time. I'm always grateful to the fans for their support, and Tottenham is always with me," he wrote in a reflective post. However, we can't help but wonder if he's truly remorseful after this tackle.
